My name is Kerri Butts and I am a MustLuvBoxers Rescue Board member and our Events Coordinator. Ever since I can remember, I have had a special love for animals. Animals of all kinds in fact. I was the kid that would bring in any stray and try to hide it in my bedroom closet, thinking I could rescue it, and no one would be the wiser. Well my mom always found me out. She would let me nurse the animals back to health and then we would find them a good home. Forward into adulthood, and this need to rescue the sick or neglected has never left me.
In 2007, I was looking for a puppy to join our family. I thought that Boxers were very pretty, but really didn't know much about them. We got an 8-week-old puppy, called her Layla, and whoa did she ever have that Boxer wiggle! Full of energy and ornery, sprinkled with sweet and loving, this little girl stole our hearts and made every day a better day. We took her everywhere we went, and she would wiggle that cute little butt until she had everyone's attention.
When Layla was about a year and a half old, I found on Craigslist, a 3-year-old Boxer-boy that was in need of a good home. I called the gal and she said she just couldn't keep him, and he needed to be re-homed soon. I got in the car and drove 3 hours just to go see him. When I got to him, he was filthy, underweight, and the ends of both his ears were bleeding. Of course, I couldn't leave him there for another minute. I packed him up, brought him home, and surprised my husband with Luke. Maybe I should have warned my husband, as he wasn't as excited as I had hoped. Good thing Luke was a Boxer, as my husband fell for him and we were home free!
A few years later, Luke left us and we were heart broken. We still had Layla and she was just the best dog ever, but something was missing. A second Boxer. This was when I realized I couldn't have just one.
I searched the internet and found one for sale just about an hour away and in the car I went and picked up my 3rd Boxer, Sawyer. Our house was back to the level we needed it to be. Two Boxers! What is not to love about having two very loyal and loving Boxers?! They will wiggle their way into your heart in a way that no others can.
In November 2017, we lost our Layla and I was beyond devastated. We still had our Sawyer and he is the sweetest boy ever. I still felt like I needed to have two Boxers though but wasn't ready to commit to another 10 to 12 years. Somehow, I thought of a rescue! I found MLBR and submitted my application to foster a pup in need. This is how I got involved with this wonderful organization. I'm in heaven being able to foster and it didn't take long for me to begin realizing this was more of a family than just a rescue organization. I wanted to jump in further and be a part of it, so I started to help a little more here and there. So, when the Events Coordinator position became available, I knew I wanted to be a bigger part of this amazing family that works so flawlessly to rescue and save these pups with such a passion. I now consider MLBR to be my extended family and look forward to doing great things together!
