Hello fellow Boxer lovers, I’m Carmen Shepherd and I am the MLBR Treasurer. I grew up in the Puyallup, Washington area and up until October 2019, called that my home. I’m a CPA, working for a Seattle company and my husband is active-duty Air Force. We recently moved to the Savannah, Georgia area and I’m lucky to be able to continue my support of the MLBR Board operations from afar.
In early 2017, my husband and I moved into our house that had a nice, big, fenced yard and decided it was time to add a pup to the family. My husband always had dogs in his life, whether they were his own or he was fostering for area rescues. His favorite breed had always been boxers or boxer-mixes. I was more skeptical. Most boxers I had met were a bit on the wild side, if you know what I mean. My only requirement was that they had to be cat-friendly, as we had a senior kitty that had recently lost her life-long companion.
After a few weeks of searching, my husband stumbled upon MLBR and Howie’s profile. I loved that they didn’t just adopt their dogs straight out, there was a process that helped ensure a good fit for everyone. We put in our application, had a home visit and met this big guy at his foster home. It was love at first sight and within a day we knew he was meant to be part of our family, even if our kitty wasn’t quite convinced. Howie is an impeccable representative of the breed; a big, goofy, lovable guy that adores his people, loves to give kisses, and enjoys leaning on anyone willing to give him a good scratch.
In the fall of 2018, when it was announced that MLBR was looking for a Board Secretary, I jumped at the chance. A way to give back and show support for an organization that meant so much to our family. And later when the Treasurer position opened up, I volunteered for that position knowing that I could provide the support needed, even from our new home in Georgia. It is a blessing to be part of an organization that provides so much for this amazing breed and works tirelessly to ensure successful adoptions.
